All Natural Diet
All natural foods are very important to diet, weight loss and pretty much our overall well
being. Maybe you’ve heard the term, “you are what you eat” and if
so, then why not nourish our bodies with whole all natural foods. So
what exactly are the foods we should eat in an all natural diet?
All natural food is the food we eat in
its purest form. By purest form I mean it is food that is unprocessed and unrefined. Don’t get this
confused with organic. Although a lot of all natural foods are grown organically, what the term organic is
referring to is the way the food is grown and cultivated. There are no chemicals
added to the soil or any pesticides used while the food is growing. This is also important but
not the point of this article.

All natural foods, which are also often
referred to as whole foods, do not just mean fruits and vegetables, although these are two very important
types. All natural foods also refer to unprocessed meats, fish, poultry and even
non-homogenized milk. These types of foods are also considered whole natural foods.
So as you can see, starting an all
natural diet doesn’t necessarily mean that you are going to have to make drastic changes to your eating
habits. What is going to change is the way you shop for
food. Although it may be helpful to have a natural food store (i.e.
Whole Foods) or a Co-op nearby, it isn’t totally necessary. A lot of
larger grocery stores are starting to understand the importance of whole natural foods and are carrying a lot
more of these items.
Some of these stores even have a
section designated for whole or natural food manufacturers. Another great alternative to super markets is
shopping at a local farmers market. Farmers markets are becoming more
and more common, especially in urban areas, as people are becoming more aware of the importance of eating all
natural foods. Also buying local is much greener and contributes to
the ultimate goal of sustainability.
So now that you’ve found a store that
carries these all natural foods that we keep talking about, so when you go shopping what exactly do you buy?
Well first you’ll need to get into the habit of reading the labels. And not just the
nutritional information, but the ingredients. Any ingredient that has refined,
bleached, enriched, milled, partially or fully hydrogenated oils, sweeteners, coloring or filling is not a
natural product. What you’ll find discerning is how many foods in the store do have these words in their
ingredients.
Refined sugar and table salt are often
hard to escape, but sugar and salt to exist in a natural state like honey, agave nectar, maple syrup, cane sugar
and sea salt accordingly. Boxed and packaged foods more than not have been processed to preserve the food and
extend the shelf life. So make sure you’re picking up that box and looking at the ingredient
list. One little fact that you might not be aware of is the order of ingredients is in
quantitative order. The first ingredient makes up the highest percentage of the product and continues in
descending order.
So what are some good examples of all
natural whole foods? All fruits and vegetables in their natural form (not canned) are
great. Unprocessed meats are also a great source of protein which can be found at your local
butcher. 100% whole wheat bread products (Ezekiel and Vogel are two of my favorites) and whole
grain rice are a few more. Most items that say ‘instant’ or ‘quick’ usually have been processed in someway to
make them cook faster. Just try to picture how that food is cultivated in its natural form and try to get as
close to that as possible.
So as you can see, an all natural diet
really doesn’t limit your food choices that much. With that said, it is also
important to be aware that just eating all natural whole foods does not automatically equal weight
loss.
Whole foods can still be calorie dense,
so it is always important to watch what you eat. But if you start to eat a
more all natural diet, you will automatically reduce the amount of sodium and sugar intake by cutting out all
those processed foods. This reduction in salt and calories from sugar will definitely help in your weight loss
goals.
